Basketball has been alive and kicking in Odisha in general and Bhubaneswar in particular also due to combined efforts of a die-hard group of players, coaches and organizing workers. Among them basketball coaches of State Directorate Sports, posted at Bhubaneswar Sports Hostel, have been organising coaching camps and tournaments here at Kalinga Stadium for the last five years.
Bhubaneswar Athletic Association (BAA) emerged champions in the Bhubaneswar Open Basketball League, which was staged by Directorate coaches Rajendra Pani, Rajesh Singh and Smarita Samantaray in association with Bhubaneswar Athletic Association (BAA), Bhubaneswar Basketball Association (BBA), Khurda District Basketball Association (KDBA) and Government Sports Hostels of Bhubaneswar and Berhampur, from November 20 to 22, 2011.
BAA won all four of their league matches to top the table with eight points. Bhubaneswar Basketball Association (BBA) finished runners-up with six points. State Sports Director Saswat Mishra and Kalinga Stadium in-charge Kumar Ranjan Panda attended the tournament to meet the players and wish them good luck. Safalya Patra and Prahallad Behera impressed the spectators as the leading scorers of the tournament.
